A Skeptical Review of Religious Prosociality (Grand Rapids)

Wednesday, June 26, 2013, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Women's City Club, 254 E. Fulton St., Grand Rapids, MI, View Map

Presented by Luke Galen, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychology, Grand Valley State University

Description

Join us for "A Skeptical Review of Religious Prosociality" with Dr. Luke Galen!

It is often suggested that religion leads individuals to be more prosocial, that is, more cooperative, generous, friendly, and happy. A commonly held belief is that "religion makes better neighbors". However, a closer examination of the research supporting these claims yields important qualifications to this relationship. Dr. Galen will offer some common examples of these types of studies and invite the audience to ask critical questions regarding the types of conclusions that can be drawn from the "religion makes you good" literature.

About the Speaker

Luke Galen is currently an Associate Professor of Psychology at Grand Valley State University. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Wayne State University. His main area of research and teaching focuses on the psychology of religion. His areas of research include the study of secularity and nonreligious groups, religious fundamentalism and the psychology of belief and non-belief. He teaches classes on the Psychology of Religion, Controversial Issues in Psychology, and Human Sexuality. He is faculty advisor to the GVSU Center for Inquiry campus group and is a member of the Reasonable Doubts podcast and radio show. He is currently working on a co-authored book entitled “Being Secular.”
